MDF Board
Medium Density Fibre Boards, or MDF as it is more commonly known, is an engineered wood product manufactured from soft and hardwood fibres mixed with a resin binder. It is then formed into sheets under extreme temperature and pressure. Because of this manufacturing process, MDF is far denser than Plywood. MDF sheets are generally used in the furniture industry – for making kitchen cabinets, wardrobes. Its smooth, unblemished face makes it ideal for applications where a high quality painted finish is required. MDF Sheets are also used within the shopfitting industry for manufacturing counters, displays and slatwall boards. MDF is sometimes used as a baseboard for flooring, however Plywood and Chipboard are generally used in preference to this as they are generally cheaper and hold a fixing better. Another downside to MDF is the amount of dust created when cut. This is because MDF is made up from compressed and binded wood fibres. Thus when cutting MDF care should be taken and respiratory equipment worn.
