Insulated Plasterboard
Insulated Plasterboard Sheets are available for the thermal upgrading of existing walls and soffits. Manufactured by the 3 main Plasterboard Suppliers, British Gypsum, Knauf Drywall and Lafarge, they come with either an expanded or extruded polystyrene or phenolic insulation board bonded directly to the back of a sheet of plasterboard.
They all come in 2400 x 1200mm sheet sizes and in a variety of thicknesses from 22mm to 90mm overall. Certain types and sizes are also available with a vapour control barrier.
The basic Thermal Board range, branded Thermaline Basic by British Gypsum has a White Expanded Polystyrene Insulation Sheet bonded to a sheet of Standard Wallboard. This is both CFC and HCFC free meaning it has a zero contribution to Ozone Depletion.
The mid-range Thermalboard, branded Thermaline Plus by British Gypsum, has an Orange coloured Extruded Polystyrene Insulation Sheet bonded to a sheet of Standard Wallboard. This is both CFC and HCFC free meaning it has a zero contribution to Ozone Depletion. Used in both new build and existing buildings where a mid to high level of Thermal Insulation is required. Available in 27mm to 48mm thicknesses, Thermaline Plus Insulated Plasterboard gives a Thermal Resistance of between 0.63m2K/W and 1.25m2K/W.
The highest performing Thermalboard in the range, British Gypsum Thermaline Super, has a brown coloured Phenolic Foam Insulation Sheet bonded to a sheet of Standard Wallboard. This is CFC free. It also has good Fire Resistance with a Class 0 rating to both sides. It also has Low Toxicity and smoke obscuration of less than 5%. Thermaline Super also comes with a Vapour Control Barrier to reduce the risk of Condensation. Thermaline Super is primarily aimed at the refurbishment market and loft conversion market where a substantial increase in Thermal Insulation is required. Available in 30mm to 90mm thicknesses, Thermaline Super Insulated Plasterboard gives a Thermal Resistance of between 0.97m2K/W and 4.06m2K/W.
Aside from the 3 Plasterboard Manufacturers Kingspan also make an Insulated Plasterboard range called Kooltherm K17 and Kooltherm K18. Kingspan K17 and K18 are a Phenolic Foam Insulated Plasterboard with K17 being fixed on drywall adhesive or plaster dabs and K18 for mechanical fixings on timber or metal stud frameworks. Kingspan K17 and K18 Phenolic Foam Insulated Plasterboard is available in 32.5mm to 82.5mm thicknesses and gives a Thermal Resistance of between 0.9m2K/W and 3.35m2K/W.
